Description
Fredrick Oak Consulting is hiring a Law Clerk II to support Assistant United States Attorneys and Attorney Advisors at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. This is a full-time, on-site position at 880 Front Street in downtown San Diego under a federal contract held by OakStrat Alliance, a joint venture of Fredrick Oak Consulting and Strativia. Fredrick Oak Consulting is the employer.
The role
You will provide legal research, analysis, and drafting support across the district's criminal and civil practice, including immigration enforcement, human trafficking, narcotics, violent crime, and fraud matters. Working with assigned attorneys, you will determine the applicable law, identify defenses and causes of action, brief attorneys on facts and authorities, and prepare memoranda, briefs, and correspondence for attorney review and signature. You will also docket matters, track due dates, and coordinate with attorneys and support staff.
The Law Clerk II does not appear in court or represent the United States. The job is making sure the attorneys who do have complete, accurate, well-reasoned work product on time.
Requirements
Required
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- At least two years of professional litigation work experience
- Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure
- Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills; ability to produce accurate work under deadline
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Sound judgment and complete discretion with sensitive case and investigative information
- U.S. citizenship
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 4 Public Trust background investigation (fingerprinting, credit check, SF-85P, OF-306)
- Residence in the United States for three of the last five years, or covered U.S. government service abroad
- Valid driver's license and residence within commuting distance of downtown San Diego
Preferred
- Active bar license in any state
- Immigration litigation experience, including habeas corpus and denaturalization matters
- Prior experience supporting a U.S. Attorney's Office, the Department of Justice, or another federal litigating component
- Familiarity with CaseView, Relativity, or Eclipse
Schedule and conditions
Monday through Friday, Government business hours between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific. Five days per week on site; telework is not provided. Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday availability as case activity dictates. Workspace and equipment furnished by the Government. Pre-employment drug screening, a client non-disclosure agreement, and completion of Department of Justice ethics and cybersecurity training are required before start. No client data or case information may be entered into any AI tool without the client's express written approval.
Anticipated start: October 2026, or as soon as security processing permits.
Compensation and benefits
$94,000 to $104,000 annually, salaried exempt. Eleven paid federal holidays. 15 days of paid time off per year, increasing to 20 after six years of service. Medical, dental, and vision coverage. Company-paid life, AD&D, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance. 401(k) with a 100 percent vested safe harbor match.
